Filming for GoF spotted
According to a local resident near Berkhamsted, England, filming for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has been going on in the area for the past few days.
Russell Brown, a resident of nearby Beacon Hill, came across a "large film crew" and found that it was in fact Warner Bros., filming what appeared to be the scene where Harry, the Weasleys and the Diggorys meet at a certain portkey to get themselves to the Quidditch World Cup:
On Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th July 2004 I was happy to come across a large film crew on one of the hills just outside my village (Beacon Hill which is located in the Ivinghoe hills near Berkhamsted). On further inspection I quickly found out that it was in fact Warner Brothers productions, and they were filming the 4th installment of Harry Potter.
From where I was standing I was able to see the characters of Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Mr. Weasley, George and Fred Weasley, and what I have come to believe to be Amos and Cedric Diggory. It looked like they were filming the scene where they are travelling to the portkey, as at the top of the hill stood one large boot which all the characters were walking towards and all looked rather exhausted after the sixth take.
The main actors Dan [Radcliffe], Emma [Watson], Rupert [Grint], and Bonnie Wright all left the set at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and doubles stepped in and continued working till 8:30 p.m.
We're working on confirmation, but the filming account exactly matches the book version of events:
"Well, have a lovely time," said Mrs. Weasley, "and behave yourselves," she called after the twins' retreating backs, but they did not look back or answer. "I'll send Bill, Charlie, and Percy along around midday," Mrs. Weasley said to Mr. Weasley, as he, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny set off across the dark yard after Fred and George.
...
They didn't have breath to spare for talking as they began to climb Stoatshead Hill, stumbling occasionally in hidden rabbit holes, slipping on thick black tuffets of grass. Each breath Harry took was sharp in his chest and his legs were starting to seize up when, at last, his feet found level ground.

Body Double for Neville Longbottom
An article in icBerkshire was on the young Thomas Davy who got the part as a double on an off-chance. This was the short piece on him and what he had to say:
A SNAP decision to get out of the rain landed one teenager with a part in the latest Harry Potter film.
On the day the production company came scouting for doubles at Windsor Boys' School, Thomas Davy only went into the school hall to get out of the downpour.
Over a year later the 15-year-old has found himself mixing with stars of stage and screen as the double for Neville Longbottom. "I always really wanted to be an actor but never thought it would be a reality" he said. "It's brilliant."
After being measured and having his photo taken, Thomas was called back for an audition at Pinewood Studio. He impressed the director so much he was cast as the double for the bumbling Neville in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
The child stars in the film can only work four hours a day because of labour laws so doubles are used for back shots and positioning.
Thomas is already living most teenagers' dreams. "I have a trailer were I can play around and was sat next to Miranda Richardson in make-up the other day" he said.
The award winning actress is playing Daily Prophet journalist Rita Skeeter. The teenager, who lives with his family in Duncannon Crescent, Windsor, will now be dividing his time until around next May between school and film studios in Watford.
But he has vowed not to forget his roots if he hits the big time. "I love living in Windsor and would have a place by the Long Walk. I have this picture of walking down there in the Winter."

GoF set preview postponed
TLC is reporting that the previously scheduled broadcast of MTV's TRL Backstage Pass will be postponed. The show was slated to check in with their contest winner "intern" on the Harry Potter set of GOF, airing this Friday at 5pm EST, but sources now say it will most likely not air until November.
Personally, I was rather wondering how they'd get to show such things so early on in production. And am not holding my breathe for November either.

Q&A at Rowlings' Site
J.K. Rowling decided to answer a few questions at her official site, concerning the upcoming book.
Here's what she had to say:
Will Arthur Weasley be the new Minister of Magic?
Alas, no.
Is Tom Riddle the Half-Blood Prince?
Well, as Tom Riddle is the same person as Voldemort, and Voldemort is NOT the Half-Blood Prince...do I really need to answer this?
Why are some people in the wizarding world (e.g., Harry) called 'half-blood' even though both their parents were magical?
The expressions 'pure-blood', and 'half-blood' and 'Muggle-born' have been coined by people to whom these distinctions matter, and express their originators' prejudices. As far as somebody like Lucius Malfoy is concerned, for instance, a Muggle-born is as 'bad' as a Muggle. Therefore Harry would be considered only 'half' wizard, because of his mother's grandparents.
If you think this is far-fetched, look at some of the real charts the Nazis used to show what constituted 'Aryan' or 'Jerish' blood. I saw one in the Holocaust Museum in Washington when I had already devised the 'pure-blood', 'half-blood' and 'Muggle-born' definitions, and was chilled to see that the Nazis used precisely the same warped logic as the Death Eaters. A single Jewish grandparent 'polluted' the blood, according to their propaganda.
In what way is 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' related to 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'?
I have been engulfed by an avalanche of questions on the subject of 'Prince' having once been a title of 'Chamber'. I am therefore attempting to answer most of them under this heading, which I think just about covers all the answerable variations (the unanswerable ones include questions such as 'who's the Half-Blood Prince?' 'what happens in the Half-Blood Prince?' and 'what does Half-Blood Prince mean?')
The plot of 'Prince' bears no resemblance whatsoever to the plot of 'Chamber', nor is it an off-cut of 'Chamber'. The story of 'Prince' takes off where 'Phoenix' ended and does not hark back to four years previously. True, mention is made to events that happened in 'Chamber,' but of course mention is also made of events that happened in 'Stone', 'Azkaban', 'Goblet', and Phoenix'.
'The Half-Blood Prince' might be described as a strand of the overall plot. That strand could be used in a whole variety of ways and back in 1997 I considered weaving it into the story of 'Chamber'. It really didn't fit there, though; it was not part of the story of the basilisk and Riddle's diary, and before long I accepted that it would be better to do it justice in book six. I clung to the title for a while, even though all trace of the 'Prince' storyline had disappeared, because I liked it so much (yes, I really like this title!). I re-christened book two 'Chamber of Secrets' when I started the second draft.
The link I mentioned between books two and six does not, in fact, relate to the 'Half-Blood Prince' (because there is no trace left of the HBP storyline in 'Chamber'.) Rather, it relates to a discovery Harry made in the 'Chamber' that foreshadows something that he finds out in 'Prince'.
Well! That's it! That's what bit of info and clues she has given us for now on her upcoming book.

Congradulations to Rowling
No, not on her book being finished. Nice try though. J.K. Rowling just announced at her website that she is now expecting her third child (due next year). She had this to say at her site....
I am really delighted to say that I am expecting a third baby, who is due next year. I always wanted three children, so I could not be happier.
Now, I know that many Harry Potter fans' first reaction wil be what does this mean for the timing of book six? (I'm not maligning you...I'm sure you're happy for me...but I know you realy want that book!) So let me reassure you that book six remains well on track and, fingers crossed of course, I don't forsee any baby-related interruptions or delays. I still can't say for sure when it will be finished, but I have written a lot and I reallly like it (a reckless challenge to fate, that; I bet the next chapter goes horribly wrong now).
So again, many congrats to you on your coming joy Joanne!

Well, it's over and done with now, and BBC has a report on how it went.
Dozens of lucky girls met Harry Potter actor Tom Felton yesterday, after the evil wizard personally invited them to attend the launch of his new fan club.
Serious Malfoy fans queued at London's Chelsea Football Club from 8.30 am and were met by Tom when the doors opened at 10.30.
Tom invited a selection of fans by letter and via his website to come and meet him in person.
Each fan was given the opportunity to chat to Tom who was only too happy to sign autographs and have photos taken.
Tom Felton signing autographsHe said; "I am really happy with the turnout. You can tell how much some people really want to be here, because they can't speak!"
Tom said that he had been asked lots of questions about the the filming of "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire" which started recently.

Filming is already underway on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, with teenage actor Robert Pattinson playing Triwizard Champion Cedric Diggory.
The film makers probably won't release any pictures of Robert playing Hufflepuff Seeker Cedric for some time, but CBBC Newsround can exclusively bring you the first pictures of him in a film he completed earlier this year.
In Kingdom in Twilight, he plays a character called Giselher, in the story of a young man called Siegfried who doesn't realise that he is heir to a conquered kingdom.
It's thought that Kingdom In Twilight will be released at the end of the year. Goblet of Fire should be in cinemas in November 2005
Here are the pictures from Kingdom in Twilight:
Potter author boosts firefighters charity effort Tayside fire officer Gordon McKenzie is being backed in his fund-raising efforts by top-selling author JK Rowling, who is supporting both her local fire brigade and a cause close to her heart. Two charities are set to benefit from the efforts of Divisional Officer McKenzie, who is Perth area temporary head of operations. It started with his idea to hurl himself out of a plane and has now incorporated an internet auction on eBay of a boxed set of Harry Potter books, one a first edition, which are all signed by the author herself. Gordon explained, I was sitting in the house a while back watching the TV and saw Lord Bath of Longleat doing a sponsored parachute jump. I said to my wife, I could do that, and she said, ˜Go on then, phone Margaret." Margaret is Margaret Barnes, Scottish fund-raiser for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund (FSNBF). So there I was doing a tandem free-fall parachute jump for the FSNBF! I wanted to open up the event and wanted to do something for the MS Society, continued Gordon. He thought of asking JK Rowling if she would like to support the dual fund- raising. She is patron of MS Society Scotland, having lost her mother to the complications of the disease. The world-famous author bought a mansion house, Killiechassie, near Aberfeldy, a few years back and had already made a donation to her local fire brigade. It was great, one day a large box arrived at the house and inside was a complete boxed set of hard-back Harry Potters, all signed by the author and The Order Of The Phoenix is a first edition, said Gordon. They have been put on eBay since we expect there to be a lot of interest ¦and will be there until next Tuesday at 8 am.Firefighters from all over Scotland will also be taking part in the sponsored parachute jump near St Andrews on September 11.

Daniel , Emma , and Rupert in a magazine interview
YP: Daniel, how did you get your Harry Potter big break?
YP: Daniel, how did you get your Harry Potter big break?
DR: Dumb luck, I auditioned for David Copperfield because my mum'sfriend was involved I was in the right place at the right time.thetheatre, when Harry Potters producer David Hayman was in the front row.I never seriously thought of acting until I started Harry Potter. Now Iam definitely doing number four. It wouldn't be easy seeing someone elseplaying Harry after four films, but if it happens I would have to get used to it.
YP: Do you really need glasses?
DR: No they are just glass. In one scene I had to act as if I had lostmy glasses but could see perfectly, which was very irritating. So I hadto concentrate on making my sight blurry.
YP: Are you, Emma and Rupert buddies?
DR: The bond just gets stronger and stronger. We do have arguments - emheated discussions, I mean - but really good friends.
YP: You guest-starred in the West End play The Play What I wrote. Whatwas it like?
DR: I did it three times. The first time I forgot my lines and I had tobe saved, the last time, I walked on, tripped over the curtain andlanded on my face. I was like, "Oh-my-god, three people from my schoolare here, and they are seeing me in a dress". That was the most nervewracking experience. I wore a blond wig, and a bright pink and bluedress. I'm never going to live that down.
YP: What's it like growing up on the Harry Potter sets?
EW: The first Harry Potter was scary, very daunting, I didn't understandthis massive whirlwind. Now I'm familiary with everything. I feel verymore confident. Do I long to be an adult? No I am having a good timebeing a teenager - it's a time of discovery and making mistakes andlearning from them - and I intend to enjoy it as much as possible.
YP: What's the toughest thing about filming?
EW: The long hours, long days and being away from friends and family.
YP: Does the 3rd Potter picture feel different?
EW: Well its darker and scarier. The first introduced family characters,in the second you got to know characters. This is my favourite becauseHermione, Ron and Harry fall out, which hasn't happened before. Alsothere are lots of new characters, like Sirius Black and the dementors.
YP: What do you enjoy about performing?
EW: The stunts are fun. I don't mind being swung around, and I love thetheatre, singing and dancing.
YP: Do you get on well with Rupert and Daniel?
EW: It's amazing how we get on - I text where we're not together.Though, we do need to escape form each other sometimes.
YP: Rupert, how do you juggle fame, filming and school?
RG: Life is pretty much as it was before, except Japanese people send mebirthday presents, and I get recognises sometimes which is weird! I goto school for exams, but I have never been top of the class, so I prefertutoring - fewer distractions. My school friends just behave normally, which helps. Also I've got lots of little sisters and we still argue andstuff.
YP: Did you honestly like Ron's pet rat Scabbers?
RG: I think rats are cool so I didn't mind doing scenes with Scabbers. The Animal department shaved bits of his fur off so he would lookmanky, but he is really a nice healthy rat who had a make over.
YP: Have you and Ron changed in the 3rd Potter movie?
RG: I'm taller and my voice has broken. Ron changes, there's theHermione budding romance thing going on. Yeah I relate to Ron because weboth have ginger hair, big families, and I'm scared of spiders like him.But I'd like Ron to turn a bit evil, that's be cool. I've always wantedto play an evil person!
YP: Describe your average day on the set?
RG: I get up early, go to the studios 45 minutes away, have breakfast, costume, hair, and make up. Hen I either go to tutoring, or on set, depending if they're ready. On set the director runs us through thescene, we'll rehearse it a couple of time, and then start filming
YP: What was the worst thing about filming?
RG: The rat peed on me! And the clothes - unfortunately Ron stillwears his Weasley sweaters, so I never got to experience normal clothes.
YP: Do you want to continue acting when you grow up?
RG: It'd be cool to carry on doing films, but when I was a kid I wantedto be an ice cream man.

Harry Potter Birthday Card Shuts Down Post Office
BUCKNER, Mo. -- A birthday card to a fictional character shut down a Missouri post office for two hours on Wednesday, KMBC-TV in Kansas City reported.
A worker at the Buckner post office spotted white powder on an envelope. The office was sealed off and hazmat crews were called in to check out the situation.
"It's not every day you get a letter with white powder all over it," police Chief Charles Loring said.
The letter turned out to be a birthday card a 16-year-old fan was sending to Harry Potter in England. The teen apparently sprinkled the card with some "floo powder," which turned out to be harmless talcum powder. In the books by JK Rowling, floo powder helps wizards travel.
According to the books, Harry Potter's birthday is July 31.

Caged Beds Go after Rowling Plea
Reacting to criticism from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and human rights groups, the Czech government today ordered the removal of caged beds from psychiatric facilities.
The minister ordered that all caged beds be removed immediately, and beds with nets by the end of the year, "Aneta Kupkova, a Health Ministry spokeswoman, said in Prague.
The move came a day after President Vaclav Klaus received a letter from Rowling, author of the bestselling Harry Potter series of children's books, protesting the practice in the Czech Republic.
Critics have said the beds, fitted with cages or nets to contain difficult patients, are barbaric.
Amnesty International and the Council of Europe have protested repeatedly against their use, and Rowling's letter was the final straw prompting Health Care Minister Josef Kubinyi to act, Kupkova said.
Of a total of 9,657 beds in Czech psychiatric facilities, about 100 have nets and only 20 have bars, she said.

Sandcastle of Hogwarts to take 1st place at competition
Judges critique each sculpture for its artistic merit, technical difficulty and overall design. Winners receive cash awards ranging from $100 to $5,000.
The 24th annual competition drew large crowds and 33 teams in masters and amateur divisions. Sculptures ranged from aliens on Mars to a war memorial.
Teams had five hours to complete their creations.
It was the final stretch of the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition yesterday, and though much of the day was marked by friendly banter, setbacks such as this one brought on nail-biting tension. The team Arch-I-Sand team from Orange County, which has competed for more than two decades, attempted to replicate Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the Harry Potter series.
The Hogwarts entry won first place in the masters division for large teams.

Author condemns caging policy
Harry Potter author JK Rowling has called for an end to the confinement of disabled children in cages in one of the European Union's newest member countries.
Rowling has protested to Stefan Fule, the Czech ambassador to London, and written to her local MEP following a Sunday newspaper investigation into the plight of children in some of the country's care homes.
She told Mr Fule: "I am sure that I am not alone in feeling a deep sense of shock that a fellow member of the European Union like the Czech Republic could permit such abuses."
A spokeswoman for Ms Rowling confirmed that she had responded to a Sunday Times report which told of five mentally handicapped children and a toddler being discovered in cages at a care home in the Czech capital Prague last month.
They were let out briefly each morning to be fed and washed but had no teddies or toys to comfort them, according to the newspaper, which was told by staff that the cages were needed to prevent hyperactive children from hurting themselves.
Ms Rowling, who lives in Edinburgh, said the children's' conditions were "far more terrifying" than anything her fictional boy wizard had to encounter.
In a letter to Scottish Labour MEP Catherine Stihler, she wrote: "I am sure I am one of many who were horrified beyond words to read about the neglect and abuse of such very vulnerable people; indeed, the word torture does not seem too strong.
"The idea that children as young as five are being locked in cages for the majority of their lives is nothing short of horrific; that this is happening in a relatively prosperous fellow EU state can only deepen feelings of outrage."
The Sunday Times quoted a spokeswoman at the Czech Republic's ministry of social affairs in Prague as saying: "We're working on it."

J.K.Rowling at the Edinburgh Festival
This just in from Rowlings' site!
I will be reading and answering questions at the Edinburgh Book Festival on 15th August this year. This will be my fifth appearance at the Edinburgh Festival; there have been readings for each of the first four Potter books, and this time my appearance will coincide (roughly) with the UK publication of 'Order of the Phoenix' in paperback.
I am looking forward to this event very much, because there will be a relatively small audience, which means I can see faces and take questions directly from the fans. Of course, events such as the readings at the Toronto Skydome and the Albert Hall are incredible, but nothing can replace the pleasure of interacting with enthusiastic readers, as opposed to waving at a sea of skin coloured blobs.
As the number of tickets is restricted, they will be available by ballot rather than on a first come, first served basis. To apply for tickets, buy the Herald newspaper on Saturday 10th July or the Sunday Herald on 11th July to get a ballot form, or visit Bloomsburys' website at www.bloomsbury.com, where you can apply online from Monday 12th July.

Schools in the UK taking a Hogwarts position
Blair opts for Harry Potter style in improving state-run schools
London, July 10 (ANI): The Tony Blair government has announced a five-year plan to improve the quality of education in UK's state schools.
The move, which involves an additional expenditure of about 47 billion pounds, aims at expanding places in existing schools and encouraging middle class students away from private schools.
According to The Mirror, school students will now be seen in uniform and will be part of a school house system similar to the one popularised by J.K Rowling in her Harry Potter series.
The government aims to make every school an independent specialist school by 2008 indicating the end of the 50 year all-purpose comprehensive school era in Britain.
Students will also have more subjects to choose from as well as better opportunities to change from academic to vocational courses.
"For many years a quality education was the prerogative of the few. It must now become the entitlement of all. We have made our decision for excellence, for opportunity, for choice for all. We have specifically ruled out any selection based on ability." Education Secretary, Charles Clarke was quoted as saying.
Teachers, however, have given mixed reactions to the proposal.
"More autonomy, less red tape and a crackdown on both bad pupil and bad parent behaviour is exactly what heads need." general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, David Hart, was quoted as saying.
"The plan to expand city academies is not based on evidence of success. Parents will be faced with a confused and confusing array of schools rather than choice and diversity." National Union of Teachers general secretary, Steve Sinnott was quoted as saying. (ANI)

Delay of PoA in China
The release of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has been delayed through the school holidays as part of an official government crackdown aimed at strengthening morals.
Although the government has not described how the movie might have a negative impact on Chinese youth, the media speculates it is due to concern over growing interest by that generation in Western-style music, video games, clothes, and movies. The crackdown has possibly also been fueled by recent reports of robbery and assault, in which teenagers claim to have been acting out scenes from television and video games.
The Spider-man and Shrek sequels were also impacted by the ban

ROWLING PICKS UP HONOUR
Harry Potter author JK Rowling is set to receive an honorary degree from Edinburgh University.
The author wrote much of her series about the world famous boy wizard while living in the Scottish capital as a single mother.
She also completed a teacher training course at Moray House in Edinburgh in 1996.
The multi-millionaire, who now lives in a Georgian mansion in the city with her husband and two children, was collecting one of the university's highest accolades, the degree of doctor honoris causa.
When her degree was announced in February, she said: "I am delighted and honoured to be receiving an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh, my adopted home city."

Attention to Details
A Louth-area businessman has been left spellbound after his firm was selected to provide props for the next Harry Potter film.
The dream order has been received by Jonathan Tebbs, owner of A Barn Full of Brass Beds. He is restoring nine beds at his Conisholme workshops for The Goblet of Fire film, the latest in the Harry Potter series.
He has also been working on a folding chair and will provide a unique iron to be used in a kitchen scene.
Set dressers for Warner Bros have paid precise attention to detail and want brass beds for the scenes.
The Hogwarts gang visit Ron Weasley's parents and are camping in a tent. Although from the outside it is a small tent, once inside it opens up into a large dormitory with bunk beds and a double bed for the Weasleys. All the props will come from A Barn Full of Brass Beds.
In previous Potter films, Julie Walters, who plays Ron Weasley's mother, has been seen to be in to "wacky old things".
So the brass beds fitted the bill for Warner Bros.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
After the rumors of the other name of her book six went abound, J.K. Rowling has decided to set the record straight with the truth. She had this to say about it on her website:
Title of Book Six: The Truth
Well, the door opened at last and I showed you the title of book six - the genuine title, the title that will appear on the published book, the title I have been using in my head for ages and ages. Unfortunately, however, the door opened on the very same day the 'Pillar of Storgé' hoaxer struck, which left a lot of Harry Potter fans bemused as to whether I was having a joke at their expense by posting another fake title to 'teach hoaxers a lesson', something I certainly wouldn't do, as it would simply frustrate, confuse or annoy the 99.9% of you who aren't hoaxers! I tried to give a clear hint that the title behind the door was the real one by making the 'Toenail' joke as well (see 'Rumours'). But just to clear up matters once and for all…
Information you take directly from this site will be truthful and accurate (I might occasionally joke, but as time goes on, you'll learn to tell when I'm joking). Do not trust anybody else claiming to have found information on this site that you cannot access, however seemingly convincing the images they provide to support their story.
I never post information on the site that I do not want fans to read immediately. In other words, anybody claiming to have 'discovered' a message that wasn't due for release yet is lying. There was never anything meaningful behind the door until the 'Do Not Disturb' sign came off!
The 'Pillar of Storgé' was never my title, and I did not change it at the eleventh hour because I was 'found out' (I nearly fell off my chair giggling when I read this).
I was delighted to see that a hard core of super-bright fans knew that the real title was once, in the long distant past, a possibility for 'Chamber of Secrets', and from that deduced that it was genuine. Certain crucial pieces of information in book six were originally planned for 'Chamber of Secrets', but very early on (first draft of Chamber) I realised that this information's proper home was book six. I have said before now that 'Chamber' holds some very important clues to the ultimate end of the series. Not as many as six, obviously, but there is a link.
Anyway: if you continue to exercise patience, you will find that the Do Not Disturb Door opens again… and again… giving you further hints about book six. But as a little bonus, and compensation for having been messed around by Mr. or Ms. Storgé, I shall tell you one thing without making you shift any bricks at all: the HBP is neither Harry nor Voldemort. And that's all I'm saying on THAT subject until the book's published.
