As a special birthday treat for Jo, South American fan site HPLA gathered money from hundreds of Latin American fans in order to send Jo a bunch of roses and teddy bears. JK later responded by a letter, thanking them for the gifts, and spoke about why she and Harry have the same birthday, July 31st.
"When I chose to give Harry my own birthday, I did it with a wry smile to myself. I had no idea, at that time, that I would ever be published, so it was a very private act! But I had always felt slightly cheated that nobody really famous shared my birthday, so I gave myself this (wizard) world world famous boy as a kind of birthday brother. The wonderful side-effect, all these years later, is letters like yours. I could never have imagined it, and it all seems slightly surreal, still!"
